Wolfen Chapel

As early as the 17th century, there is evidence of a chapel at the so-called "Schweinanger" in Brixlegg. The chapel, built in 1858 by master builder Johann Wolf, was demolished in 1980 and replaced by a new chapel. In the mid-sixties, the chapel was frequently visited by thieves. Besides valuable and rare votive tablets, the Madonna of Mercy was also stolen.

The present chapel was erected at the end of the 1970s and consecrated in honour of "Maria am Wege" (St. Mary's Road) on 6th October 1984. The Wolfen Chapel has been known as a place of pilgrimage for over 100 years. With the construction of the main road in the 1930s, however, the place of worship was forgotten and only a few votive tablets, prints, bridal wreaths, a child's crutch and a stramine embroidery from 1912 still bear witness to the former much-visited spot. The window frames, a baroque grille and a baroque altar with four turned columns from the old chapel were transferred to the new chapel.

The Schweinanger Chapel owes its present name to the master builder Wolf. He probably built the chapel as a thank you for the successful construction of the railway bridge in Brixlegg or as a memorial to the victims of the railway construction.

The first construction of the chapel is probably connected with the Rattenberg plague house or "Siechenhaus" and thus a plague chapel. The present chapel is a single-storey building with a polygonal choir stall. The chapel is open on three sides and has two windows in the choir stall. The porch is separated from the choir stall by a baroque lattice.

In 2001, on Norbert Wolfs iniative, renovation work on the Wolfen Chapel was started. The altar was repaired and a Madonna of Mercy was purchased, which was restored free of charge by the Brixlegg restorer Josef Miosek. On 22nd October 2004, the solemn blessing of the altar, the Madonna of Mercy and a picture of the Madonna was given by the local priest, Josef Wörter.
