Did you know...?
In many of the primeval mountain pastures, the original construction date can no longer be determined exactly - too many centuries have passed since then. The Stettauer Alm near Alpbach is one such case. However, it is considered certain that it is between 400 and 500 years old. Because not enough fodder was produced in the valley in the past, the farmers had to extend grazing to the high mountains. A few so-called home cows remained in the valley, the rest of the cattle spent the summer months on the alpine pastures. In this way, the cultural landscape characteristic of the Alpine region was created over centuries. Until today the Stettauer Alm still fulfils its original purpose and accommodates dairy cows. Not much has changed at all: Even the old shingle roof still exists, held together by broken stones instead of nails. The ancient building can be viewed up close on this leisurely hike. On the way back, the landscape opens up and there is a tremendous view of the Alpbachtal and Gratlspitze.
